I study the computational basis of human learning and inference. Through a combination of mathematical modeling, computer simulation, and behavioral experiments, I try to uncover the logic behind our everyday inductive leaps: constructing perceptual representations, separating “style” and “content” in perception, learning concepts and words, judging similarity or representativeness, inferring causal connections, noticing coincidences, predicting the future. I approach these topics with a range of empirical methods — primarily, behavioral testing of adults, children, and machines — and formal tools — drawn chiefly from Bayesian statistics and probability theory, but also from geometry, graph theory, and linear algebra. My work is driven by the complementary goals of trying to achieve a better understanding of human learning in computational terms and trying to build computational systems that come closer to the capacities of human learners.
I am interested in how people use physical reasoning for a variety of common-sense tasks such as prediction, inferences about object properties, or action planning. To support these capacities, we all have the ability to simulate how our environment will unfold based on the physics of the world. By using a combination of psychophysics and computational modeling, I study how we are able to perform this simulation, how explicit knowledge and rules impact our simulations, and how we can draw on these predictions to make inferences about the world and plan our actions.
I study the cognitive mechanisms underlying the human moral conscience. In particular, I am attempting to characterize the abstract rules used by preschoolers when they make moral judgments, many of which rely on subtle differences in the mental states of agents. Describing these rules can help us understand the representations and computations that power the moral mind.
I study social perception and decision-making in humans using computational models and behavioral experiments. People are very good at making judgments based on incomplete and uncertain evidence, while efficiently combining expectations and sensory stimuli. I am interested in the probabilistic computation that makes social inference and long-term planning possible. How do we make choices that pay off only far in the future?
How do we make sense of actions of people whose goals and values are very different from our own?
I study in how intuitive, potentially abstract theories can support perception. More generally, I am interested in understanding how knowledge expressed in different forms (e.g. propositionally or as a set of examples) can be synthesized and applied. To investigate these questions, I build computational models and compare the results with human psychophysical experiments.
I work on social perception and multi-agent systems. In particular, I am interested in building computational models that have human-like abilities to reason about the mental states of others and applying those abilities to multi-agent systems to solve problems such as collaboration, communication, and teaching. I am also interested in using computational tools to study human perception of animacy (e.g., the integration of intuitive physics and intuitive psychology).
I study how humans and machines can perceive faces and shapes in general. In particular, I am interested in the combination of visual and haptic input, the developmental trajectory of face perception as well as perception under partial or full occlusion. As a computational model for faces, I choose to focus on 3D Morphable Models as generative representation since they naturally disentangle the underlying variables and inverse rendering as inference strategy.
I work on probabilistic programming, generative modeling and amortized inference. I have mainly looked at this through the lens of training deep neural networks to speed up sampling algorithms such as importance sampling and sequential Monte Carlo. Using these tools, I want to build systems that can efficiently learn concepts, understand scenes and agent behavior by drawing on research in computational cognitive science.
I am interested in the underlying foundations of objecthood, which is one of the most basic building blocks of our cognition. By combining behavioral, electrophysiological (ERPs), and computational methods, I hope to understand the ongoing dynamics of how humans – adult and infants – track objects and understand them.
My research interest lies in neural scene representations – the way neural networks learn to represent information on our world. My goal is to allow independent agents to reason about our world given visual observations, such as inferring a complete model of a scene with information on geometry, material, lighting etc. from only few observations, a task that is simple for humans, but currently impossible for AI.
My research synthesises machine learning and cognitive science to develop learning systems which are more flexible, interpretable, and human-like. This goal is best realised by models which embody explicit structured relationships between parts: compositionality, hierarchy, causality. I am interested in the interaction of symbolic probabilistic reasoning and sub-symbolic statistical learning in the attempt to understand and replicate higher level cognition in a human-cognitively meaningful way. I study program learning. Specifically, I work on the idea that learning programs from data could provide a way to develop machines which possess more human-like intelligence. We don’t always have the luxury to do careful evaluation of the likelihood and value of an outcome, and indeed we are often inclined to take suboptimal choices. I am starting this investigation by modeling decision making in spatial tasks with Prospect Theory principles and hope to expand to other natural tasks and look into other possible explanations. Eventually, I want to implement findings from this investigation in complex dynamical control systems that heavily interact with humans.

I am interested in causality, counterfactuals, and responsibility. In my work, I investigate the ways in which these different concepts are linked. For example, when judging whether one event caused another event to happen, people often compare what actually happened with what they think would have happened in the absence of the causal event. My current research is at the intersection of probabilistic inference, discriminative learning techniques and computational vision. To this end, I have been trying to push the idea of framing problems in computer vision in the context of inverse graphics (a.k.a graphics programming). Generative models provide the flexibility to model complex structure in the world but inference is often intractable or slow. Along with general purpose MCMC techniques, I am interested in exploring fast discriminative techniques to speed up inference in probabilistic models with complex structured output spaces. My research in the Tenenbaum lab is focused on exploring computational models of how humans learn and generalize through inductive inference. My undergraduate honors thesis analyzed how a computer might construct a hypothesis space (i.e. candidate guesses about the concept to be learned) that could match human generalization performance. In that work, I examined several different unsupervised learning techniques to build a hypothesis space for a Bayesian concept learner. Recently, I have been looking at how humans seem to be using, on an abstract level, taxonomic, tree-based models of similarity to guide their generalization. In my other lab, I am working on understanding the dynamics underlying neural computations in small networks of neurons.

I graduated from the Brain and Cognitive Science Department at MIT doing a UROP with Professor Tenenbaum. My personal research interests for the future include modeling human social cognition.

I graduated from Brain and Cog Sci, only to stick around MIT in the Speech and Hearing Bioscience and Technology program. (I’m a cognitive scientist at heart, of course.) I’m interested in language — both its evolution as a communication system and its purpose as an internal evoker of mental representations — and how speech sounds might act as the elementary units of those representations.
I graduated MIT (majoring in BCS & minoring in music.) My research interest lies in searching for the fundamental ways humans generalize and understanding how they interpret novel ideas.
